Why the Altneu?
Since its founding in the fall of 2021, The Altneu Synagogue has broken every stereotype and defied all expectations.
At The Altneu, our doors are open wide to Jews of all backgrounds, ages, and walks of life. Step inside our synagogue on any given Shabbat and witness a beautiful fusion of tradition and modernity. Jews who are religious observant from birth, sit side by side with Jews exploring Judaism for the first time, all finding their place within our welcoming home.
This is a place to grow in Judaism and create meaningful relationships with Jews from all walks of life, to “make the old new and make the new holy,” in the words of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook.
It’s the promise of a future. The Altneu is changing the Jewish landscape of Manhattan
This future could be your LEGACY.

The location
The historic landmark Thomas Lamont Mansion at 107 East 70th Street is uniquely positioned to be the Altneu’s new permanent home. Praised by the New York Times as “The Best House on the Best Block,” the mansion is situated on one of the Upper East Side’s most charming tree-lined streets. Its historic, Tudor architecture provides the backdrop for a synagogue that feels like home.
Since moving into this remarkable building, we have experienced the warmth and connection it fosters. As our community continues to grow and thrive, we’ve recognized the exciting potential to enhance our space and create even more opportunities for meaningful engagement.
The ask
We invite you to be part of this exciting journey through our capital campaign. Your support has been helping us transform the Thomas Lamont Mansion into a vibrant center for Jewish life, where we host over 500 people every Shabbat, enhance Torah learning, and foster dynamic gatherings for community members at every stage.
Together, we have expanded our sanctuary, created a breathtaking library to serve as our Beit Midrash, and established a grand ballroom for receptions. The renovations will also include a Hashkama Sanctuary, a children’s cultural center, and an enhanced Aron Kodesh, ensuring that every member of our community has a space to call their own. Your contribution will help ensure that our community continues to flourish in a space that truly feels like home.
Will you join us in making this vision a reality? While your gift, no matter the size, will make a lasting impact, we ask that you make a gift that is meaningful to you.
